Treatment of syphilis is with benzylpenicillin (or doxycycline if there is a penicillin allergy). Granuloma inguinale (donovanosis) is caused by the bacterium Klebsiella granulomatis. The risk of preterm delivery and late miscarriage is doubled if BV is present in early pregnancy, however treatment does not reduce the perinatal risks so should only be used in symptomatic women.
