Types of fiscal policy

Contractionary

If the government is trying to constrain aggregate demand, reduce debt or control inflation.

Expansionary

If the government is trying to positively stimulate economic activity.

Examples of contractionary fiscal policy

Increasing taxes, cutting government spending, cutting budget deficit.

Examples of expansionary fiscal policy

Cutting taxes, government spending, increasing budget deficit, increased borrowing.
