Galacia-Volynia

After the death of Yaroslav the Wise in 1054, Kyivan Rus had disintegrated into separate principalities, including Halych and Volodymyr- Volynsky principalities. Galicia-Volhynia - a state founded in 1199 by Roman, the prince of Volhynia, who united Galicia and Volhynia under his rule. The Romanovych dynasty ruled the state until its demise in 1340. In 1340, the era of Kyivan Rus came to an end in Ukrainian lands.

Kozak Mamai

Cossack Mamay is one of the most common characters in Ukrainian folk paintings. This original genre was formed under the influence of folklore. The hero of this kind of painting - a young Cossack from Zaporizhzhia- became a beloved folk hero.

Lviv. Danylo Halytsky

Danylo was an exceptionally gifted ruler. For a time he unified the western territories of Ukraine. He built a number of new cities, including Kholm (his new capital) and Lviv; reformed the military forces, and gained control over the boyars. Under his reign Western European cultural influences were strong in Galicia-Volhynia, and Western European political and administrative forms took hold, particularly in the towns.

Bohdan Khmelnytsky

He led an uprising against the Commonwealth and its magnates (1648-1654) that resulted in the creation of a state led by the Cossacks of Ukraine. In 1654, he concluded the Treaty of Pereyaslav with the Tsardom of Russia.

He ruled Kiev (1019-1054), forged trading alliances with western Europe, and created a legal code
