Result of elections in newly united territories of Sardinia, Lombardy, and Sicily
All agreed on unification leaving Austrian Venetia and the portion of the Papal states - mainly Rome and the area surrounding it (which France supported militarily). The remainder of the city-states united.

Historically, the French maintained troops there to help protect the Pope and the Papacy. Once they are forced to withdraw those troops to fight in the Franco-Prussian war, Italian troops are able to invade Rome and completed Italy's unification under KING VICTOR EMMANUEL II.
