Definitions of HEALTH
-Absence of disease -A dynamic state ranging from wellness to illness -A state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity -Ability to meet basic needs

-Comprised of a variety of systems -A biopsychosocial being -An integrated whole with basic psycho-physiological needs -A spiritual being created in the image of God
Wellness-Illness Continuum (CCM's View)
-Each individual moves along a wellness-illness continuum and possesses various strengths and limitations that affect the ability to meet basic needs -Failure to adequately meet any of these needs may create a health problem that the individual, family, and/or community may require assistance from the health care system
Who needs assistance to meet needs?

Nursing takes place in any environment in which a systematic approach to diagnosing and treating an individual is applied

Nursing's unique function is to assist individuals during all stages of development to achieve optimal health. The nursing process in CCMs organizing framework is used in health promotion and maintenance as well as in diagnosing and treating human responses to actual or potential health problems. -Nursing decisions are based on critical thinking regarding needs of each person, family, or community. -Nursing is an integral part of health care and performing independent, collaborative, and dependent functions.

Levels of Preventive Care
Primary Prevention: true prevention, precedes disease or dysfunction and is applied to patients considered physically and emotionally healthy. ex; health promotion, vaccination, physicals Secondary Prevention: focuses on individuals who are experiencing health problems or illnesses and are at risk for developing complications or worsening conditions. ex; screening, diagnosis Tertiary Prevention: occurs when a defect or disability is permanent and irreversible. It involves minimizing the effects of long-term disease or disability by interventions directed at preventing complications and deterioration. ex; restorative care, rehab
Nursing Process
Requires clinical judgement, critical thinking, is patient centered Assessment: collecting, organizing, validating and recording data about a patients health status. baseline assessment, using your senses.
