a communication link established in 1963 to allow the leaders of the US and the Soviet Union to contact each other in times of crisis.
House Un-American Activities Committee
a congressional committee that investigated Communist influence inside and outside the US government in the years following WWII.
Immigration Act of 1965
a law that increased the number of immigrants allowed to settle in the US.
horizontal integration
the merging of companies that make similar products. Gilded Age.
imperialism
the policy of extending a nation's authority over other countries by economic, political, or military means.
human rights
the rights and freedoms, such as those named in the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, to which all people are entitled.
impeach
to formally charge an official with misconduct in office. The House of Representatives has the sole power to do this.
Homestead Act
1862 - Provided free land in the West to anyone willing to settle there and develop it. Encouraged westward migration.
House of Burgesses
Virginia colony legislature formed in 1619.
Home Rule
a state's powers of governing its citizens without federal government involvement.
