Why did you select to apply for this position?

- I want to work at Veeva as a Marketing Data Analyst because, as the job posting says, it's an opportunity to positively affect the life sciences and healthcare industry, improving the lives of customers, employees, and communities, by using data to inform decisions. And this is all while taking part in the unparalleled workshops and mentorship that Generation Veeva has to offer. - And this is important to me because, as I alluded to before, while I have experience with coding, analysis, and technology, I've never really had the opportunity to devote myself fully to it. Therefore, by being a Marketing Data Analyst at Veeva, and having the chance to use data not only to decide upon better business practices but also take part in bringing therapies to our patients faster, I would gain a breadth of experience that's unique to Veeva and the personnel and resources it has to offer. And from these experiences, I could apply my data analysis skills and develop them further, and gain new skills along the way, while doing something meaningful for the health of others.

What makes you successful?

- I'm willing to try new things to grow as a person and help others. Problem - Catering person at Panera was out, but there was a person on the phone that wanted to make a catering order. Action - Even though I had never taken a catering order before, I knew the console where you would take one, so I decided to give it a try. Result - I was successful in taking the order, and in doing so, I secured a sale, instead of telling the customer to call back and potentially have them not do so.

What kind of environment do you think you work best in?

- If I had to choose a trait for an environment that I would work best in, I would say one that is conducive to collaboration because though the challenges may be greater, it is incredibly beneficial to have other people you can learn from, delegate tasks to, and bounce ideas off of. Problem - At GoalTac, I work in a team with of 5 - 7 other software developers, and because they use technologies that I didn't have previous experience with, such as TypeScript and React.js. Action - I struggled in the beginning to catch up and get acclimated but I kept practicing, looked at other people's code, and asked for help proactively. Result - As a result of the support of my team and my willingness to become better and get the resources necessary to do that, I am a far more capable developer on the team, who is still learning.

How do you respond under pressure?

- Under pressure, I stay calm and target tasks in order of priority, so I can continue to do my tasks the best I possibly can. Problem - On a day with a high volume of orders, a pickup customer became frustrated that their order was not ready yet, and approached me with their frustrations. Action - I responded calmly, apologizing for the delay, and showed empathy and understanding for their situation. - I checked up on their order as often as I could, in the midst of the number of customers that needed their order taken. Result - Even though I couldn't make their order come out any quicker, by attending to their needs, while also managing other responsibilities, I gave them the best care possible. - Hopefully, this preserved their willingness to come back

What is a weakness you're aware of?

A weakness that I am aware of is that I have a tendency to overthink. However, it is something I am actively working on and trying to improve, namely by writing things down, and maybe making a quick pros and cons list, in order to focus my thoughts. And even though it's something that's a weakness of mine, I feel that it reflects my dedication to attaining the best possible situation for myself and everyone I'm working with. Moreover, working as a Marketing Data Analyst at Veeva would help me develop in this way because I would have to make decisions, which very well could be time-sensitive, thus putting me in an environment where I can learn that it's okay to take my time and think, but I have to remain grounded.

Tell me about yourself.

As you saw on my resume, I'm a senior Psychological Sciences major, Cognitive Science, and Analytics minor at the University of Connecticut. I have a strong technical background, with some experience in a variety of programming languages and technologies, and I am always looking to learn more. I'm very passionate about helping others, whether it be as a mentor, like in AMP, or just as a peer, like at Husky Developers, where I provide support and guidance to people less experienced than me while learning as much as I can from others. Additionally, I am very team-oriented, like in my current role in the UConn start-up I am a part of — GoalTac — which is a productivity app that has integrated social and gamification components to motivate people to achieve their goals. Moreover, I was, specifically, drawn to this role because it would allow me to combine my experience in the realms of technology, analysis, and teamwork, challenging me to hone my skills and advance my career, while doing something meaningful for the benefit of others.

What is your greatest strength?

I believe my greatest strength to be that I work well with others and that I'm a fast learner. The area that I've demonstrated this the best is at GoalTac, since it is an app, naturally you have to collaborate with others, delegate tasks, and code with others. In the same context, while I've had experience programming in many languages, before GoalTac, I had never had the opportunity to code in TypeScript, using React, along with using Chakra UI as a UI library and Supabase for backend storage. So, all of it was very new to me. But thankfully, I was able to adapt swiftly to the suite of new technologies that I had to use to be a meaningful member of the team. And I think I excel in these ways because I love learning new things.

Why did you choose to major in Psychology if you're interested in technical roles?

I chose to major in Psychology because, for most of high school, I took CS classes, and then in my senior year I took AP Psychology and I really loved it and I still do. But in college, especially in terms of the classes I chose, I realized that while I do love Psychology, I prefer to work with technical problems. With that being said though, I am grateful for my Psychology major because I learned a lot of valuable skills in terms of communication and research, which I did for GoalTac to gain support for our methodology in the literature, all while also doing development, and this is a blend of expertise that I would likely not have had I not gone with a Psychology major.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself knowing the ins and outs of the tech industry and being well-defined in my role, and that starts off by getting this job, and I see myself in a position where I have more skills in this industry and am able to take on bigger projects.

Tell me a time you were challenged at work.

Problem - Day when multiple people were absent at Panera during rush hour. Action - Suggested to team member that we delegate responsibilities — I cover cleaning and maintenance, while she take orders, and we'd check back periodically. Result - Got through the lunch rush, with only 2 people in the front, while delivering great customer service and keeping the restaurant clean and everything well-stocked.

Tell me about a time you faced a problem with a team member.

Problem - Cognitive Science class — had problem sets we could work with other people; worked with friend and another person - My friend and I could meet, but the other person could not, which made communication about thought processes and our plans difficult Action - Initiated and normalized checking in with the whole group via text Result - Ensured that we completed the problems to the best of our ability, in a seamless manner, despite the fact that we all couldn't meet

Tell us about your proudest accomplishment.

My proudest accomplishment is my Coding for Cognitive Science final project. Since I'm a fan of the field of Natural Language Processing, I wanted to analyze the sentiment of child speech using the CHILDES Corpora from the NLTK library. However, the files required were not accesible. So, instead of giving up on the prospect of doing an NLP project, I searched the NLTK library for other corpora that could work. And I stumbled across 2 corpora — for State of the Union and Inaugural Addresses. From there I cleaned the data, tabulated it, and finally I visualized the sentiment, both across time and comparing president to president. All in all, even though there were quite a few hiccups, I was able to take the project in a new direction in a timely manner, and I was very happy with the outcome. Tell me about a time where the situation was out of your control but you were to blame?

Problem - A customer came up to me at Panera to complain that there was a mistake with their order. Action - I apologized to the customer and showed understanding for their frustration and told them that I would get it fixed. - I went to the kitchen and informed them of the situation and told them to make their order again. Result - The customer was happy with the outcome, and I was able to demonstrate my willingness to assist customers when their orders weren't made to their liking, potentially making them a repeat customer.

Explain a time where you have faced adversity.

Problem - I accidentally booked a shift the day before I had an exam during my freshman year of college. - This was an issue because I was still getting used to working and going to school, both individually and at the same time. Action - I spent the rest of the day studying for the exam. Result - I did well on the exam, but I didn't feel as comfortable as I would've liked, so in the future I started preparing earlier and, if possible, planned my shifts around my academic schedule.

Tell me about a specific time when you showed your leadership skills.

Problem - I was given a new member to train while I was relatively new myself. Action - As a newer employee, I connected with them on how new and hectic the whole experience can feel, and gave them support and encouragement as they slowly but surely started getting a grasp of how to complete their assigned tasks well. Result - They became a very fine service ambassador, and went on to train other people, as well. Problem 2 - I was elected co-captain of XC team. Action 2 - As my first designated leadership position, I struggled initially, especially since they were fairly rowdy, but I was patient and showed my support to all the other runners. Result 2 - They warmed up to me and showed that they appreciated my support and came to me for advice and help when they needed it, which showed that they trusted me as a captain.

What was the toughest challenge you've faced?

Problem - Partner for GoalTac project became sick, and it was one of my first projects, which was optimizing our login and signup. Action - I broke the problem into substeps, looked to other people's code for inspiration, and reached out for help when I was stuck. And of course, I practiced good debugging strategies and printed to the console to learn what errors actually mean. Result - I was able to get the error from the login page to be resolved and have a notification pop up on the screen when the user successfully created an account. Tell me time you failed.

Problem - While cleaning tables, I saw a glass of water, and thinking it was left by mistake, I brought it to the dish return area. - However, I learned that a customer intentionally left the glass there, and they were upset that I put it away. Action - I apologized for my error in judgment and showed empathy for their frustration, and then I got them another glass of water and offered them a cookie. Result - This customer was a well-known repeat customer so by ensuring that he was well taken care of, we still had a repeat customer and I showed my ability to admit it when I've made a mistake and my dedication to making it right to a customer.
