What is Syntax?
Syntax
component of grammar that deals with how words and phrases are combined into larger phrases
Ungrammatical
when a string of words does not form a sentence, marked by a *
Linguistic Expressions
a piece of language that has a certain form, meaning, and syntactic properties (Ex. Words and phrases)
Arguments
if an expression occurs in a sentence, certain other expressions are required to occur in that order
Syntactic Constituent
in a phrasal expression, the smaller expressions out of which the phrase was constructed
Grammarical
when a string of words really does form a sentence
Syntactic Properties
1. Word Order- how are expressions allowed to be ordered in respect to one another 2. Co-Occurrence- what expressions must occur within a sentence together
Syntactic Categories
Examples include: sentences, nouns, noun phrases... etc.
