I was a military historian who believed that in order for a nation to be successful, they would need a strong navy. I wrote a book called The Influence of Sea Power Upon History in which I discuss how past successful nations had their navy to thank. I also strongly asserted the fact that during war, in order to win we must take control of the seas.

Alfred T. Mahan

I am an important event that occurred in 1898 during the Spanish-American War outside of Santiago, Cuba. Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders gained fame from me by charging up the hills to claim the high grounds around Santiago, and granting Americans and Cuba a victory against Spain. Two days after me, the Spanish navy tried to escape, but Americans already surrounded and sieged Santiago's harbor, destroying the Spanish ships, which caused the Spanish to surrender (Lapsansky-Werner 193).

I am Spain's ambassador to Washington D.C.. I am the person who wrote the private letter that was stolen by Cuban rebels and got leaked to William Hearst. This letter that I wrote was published in the Journal in February of 1898. In writing this letter, I called William McKinley weak and a stupid politician causing American jingoism to arise.

I am an American Naval commodore who commanded a U.S fleet at the Battle of Manila Bay. Upon my order, my fleet decimated the Spanish vessels, it was a sound victory,with not a single American casualty. Following my success, I was appointed by congress the rank of admiral of the Navy, being the only person in United States history to achieve this.

Along with new ideas, beliefs, and customs. Which just so happens to bring more power to a country due to me giving lands, bases, resources from other countries.

I was greatly fueled by a letter by Enrique Dupuy de Lôme that stated that the United States' president was a poor leader. I caused an inflamed relationship with Spain, which in turn caused the Spanish-American war (Lapsansky-Werner et al. 193). Who am I?

Jingoism

I am a Cuban Patriot and I helped to launch a war against the Spanish. I unified patriots to start the movement for Cuban Independence. I also used guerrilla warfare and hit-and-run tactics to attack the Spanish. Who am I?

Rough Riders

I am the theory that life consists of competitive struggles in which not everyone can survive. I feel that certain nations and races were more important and superior to others and therefore were made to rule over lower class people and cultures. Some Americans embraced these ideas and began to worry that if the United States remained isolationists while Europeans conquered the rest of the world practicing imperialism that America would not make it is a country (Lapsansky-werner et al. America on the World Stage). What Am I?

Social Darwinism

The was fought for during the 1890s because I am important for trade and shipping routes. After my Queen (Queen Liluokalani) was overthrown by the United States spent 5 years determining if I should be annexed. With the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, the United States decided to annex me in 1898 (Lapsansky-Werner 193).

The acquisition of Hawaii

I was an agreement that was signed in December 1898 that ended the Spanish-American war. The countries that signed me were the United States and Spain. I went into effect on April 11, 1898. After signing me Spain gave up control of Cuba, Guam , and Puerto Rico. Also,the Philippines were sold for $20 million dollars to the U.S. (Lapsansky-Werner, Levy, Roberts, Taylor).

Treaty of Paris

I was a warship that was in the Havana Harbour sent to protect U.S. citizens in Cuba when I blew up and was destroyed. 266 people on board were killed. At first most blamed the Spanish for my destruction and I was a big cause of the Spanish-American War. McKinley ordered an investigation. What am I?

USS Maine

I was part of the greatest news paper chain in American history, which heightened the public's dislike of the Spanish Government, and these papers were called the yellow press, I also wrote the headline "Worst Insult to the United States in its History".
