Western influence in both Africa and the Middle East has caused tension by changing their lifestyles and ways of thinking. In Africa, tension has driven the traditional lifestyle to believe that the urban lifestyle is corrupt. Urban lifestyle believes that rural lifestyle is backward. "Many urban people view rural people as backward. Rural dwellers view the cities as corrupting and destructive to traditional African values and customs." (p. 708). The situation in the Middle East is similar to the one in Africa. For example, a new Shah in Iran created a new civilization that was based on greed and materialism, which traditional Iranians had associated with American influence "Millions of devout Muslims looked with distaste at the new Iranian civilization. In their eyes, it was based on greed and materialism, which they identified with American influence (p. 714).
