Wound healing - intentions
Secondary Intention wound healing
(heals wounds by burns, pressure ulcers, and severe lacerations) -open skin edges -extensive granulation tissue -no suturing -extensive scarring -extensive loss of tissue -takes longer to heal -chances of infection are greater
Primary Intention wound healing
(how clean surgical incisions heal) -approximated (closed) skin edges -minimal granulation tissue -early suturing -minimal tissue loss -minimal scarring -heals rapidly -risk of infection is low
Tertiary Intention wound healing
open skin edges that are sutured later -moderate granulation tissue -delayed suturing -moderate scarring -moderate tissue loss -delayed healing -moderate risk of infection
