A key leader in the zionist movement was Theodor Herzl. He advocated for the independence of the national state in Palestine for Jews. By WWI, although steps had been taken to establish this control, it was evidently not officially achieved. These steps included the Zionist Congress meeting in Switzerland to proclaim this control in Palestine for the Jewish people, along with the continuing migration by the thousands.

How were Jews mistreated in various countries?

Easter Europe, the leader in Jewish mistreatment at the time, had 72% of the Jewish population. Jews in Russia were subject to persecution through pogroms in almost 700 Russian towns and villages. Largely in Ukraine, these pogroms were organized massacres. Additionally, Jews were forced to live in specific regions of Russia. This mistreatment caused a large emigration movement to the US, Canada, and Palestine where they would form the Jewish nationalist movement called zionism.

The Enlightenment along with other major changes such as the FR created equality for Jews in many countries throughout Europe. Additionally, the revolutionary decrees in France of 1790/91 also aided the increased freedoms of the Jews towards complete citizenship. Following the Revolutions of 1848, these freedoms spread through central and western Europe, enabling the Jews to leave the ghettos and participate in the culture of higher education and parliaments. they continued to occupy jobs such as scientists, performers, scholars, bankers, lawyers, and journalists. their presence in universities and the active population were increasing.

Zionism began as a Jewish nationalist movement to Palestine as a result of the mistreatment of Jews in Russia that led to their escape through emigration. Their mistreatment, evident throughout history, motivated them to achieve national independence in Palestine, their ancient homeland.

the rise of nationalism by the late 19th c had increased the belief that an individual's nationality and race were better than that of another country's race within their culture (racism). as Jews had previously been portrayed as "murderers of Jesus" since the Middle Ages, they continued to be restricted from equal rights and placed under attack throughout earlier history.
