1-1 Variables and Expressions
like terms
Terms that contain the same variables raised to the same power.
base
The number that is multiplied by itself when raised to a power.
additive inverse
The opposite of the number. A number and its opposite add up to give zero.
multiplicative property of zero
The product of any number and zero is zero.
Commutative Property
The property that says that two or more numbers can be added or multiplied in any order without changing the result.
domain
The set of input values of a function.
evaluate
To find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression
multiplicative inverses
Two numbers whose product is 1. Also called reciprocals.
multiplicative identity
When any number is multiplied by 1, the product is the number
discrete function
a graph that consists of points that are not connected
mapping
Illustrates how each element of the domain is paired with an element in the range.
range
The set of output values for a function.
associative property
The way in which numbers are grouped does not change their sum or product
distributive property
a property indicating a special way in which multiplication is applied to addition of two or more numbers in which each term inside a set of parentheses can be multiplied by a factor outside the parentheses, such as a(b + c) = ab + ac
function
a relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element of the range
relation
a set of ordered pairs
dependent variable
a variable (often denoted by y ) whose value depends on that of another.
power
an expression that represents repeated multiplication of the same factor It can also refer to the exponent
coordinate system/coordinate plane
formed by the intersection of two number lines, the horizontal axis and the vertical axis
exponent
indicates the number of times the base is used as a factor
factors
quantities being multiplied
product
the answer to a multiplication problem
order of operations
the order in which operations in an expression to be evaluated are carried out. 1. parentheses 2. exponents 3. multiplication and division (from left to right) 4. addition and subtraction (from left to right) PEMDAS
y-coordinate
the second number in an ordered pair
additive identity
the sum of any number and zero is equal to the number
x-intercept
the x-coordinate of a point where a graph crosses the x-axis
y-intercept
the y-coordinate of a point where a graph crosses the y-axis
independent variable
variable (often denoted by x) that is manipulated or can be changed, it determines the output
simplest form
when an expression contains no like terms or parenthesis
algebraic expression
A combination of variables, numbers, and at least one operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
continuous function
A function whose graph is an unbroken line or curve with no gaps or breaks.
coefficient
A number multiplied by a variable in an algebraic expression. It is located in front of the variable.
term
A number, a variable, or a product or quotient of numbers and variables.
ordered pair
A pair of numbers that can be used to locate a point on a coordinate plane
equivalent expressions
expressions that have the same value
x-coordinate
the first number in an ordered pair
