1. Song Form Terminology

AABA

A common verse/refrain song form pattern. Each "A" section would be a verse/refrain.

Section

A general period of time in a song that contrasts with other periods and can be distinguished by changes in parts, instrumentation, elements, tempo, and meter.

Pre Chorus

A section that transitions from the subordinate section of a song to the dominant section of the song.

Solo

An instrumental bridge section often used in pop and rock.

Intro

The beginning section of a song before the lyrics or lead instrument begins.

Chorus

The dominant, most memorable section of a song that is often loud, high, and repetitive. It is usually the title of the song.

Refrain

The hook of a song that is usually at the end of a verse and often part of the verse. It is usually the title of the song.

aab

The most common blues pattern.

ABAB

The most common verse-chorus song form pattern

ABABCB

The most common verse-chorus song form pattern with a bridge.

Bridge

The strongest contrasting section of a song that presents new information and is often not repeated.

Verse

The subordinate section of a song that is generally less memorable because it is quieter, lower, and less repetitive. This section is usually returned to throughout the song.
