'Getting the gist' is when a student first identifies the most important information about a paragraph, or the main idea. Then they condense the information into one main idea statement of 10 words or less. The rule-based approach is where students follow a set of rules or steps to produce a summary. These rules are: 1. Substitute a more general term for a list of specific terms; 2. Delete redundant information; 3. Delete information that is not absolutely necessary to the overall meaning; 4. Select or create a topic sentence. Once the students have come up with summaries of the paragraphs, they then combine them to make a final summary of the whole passage.

Compare and contrast the "getting the gist" and rule-based approaches to writing a summary.
