Pedestal ?

A camera move vertically lowering or raising the camcorder, approaching either the floor or the ceiling, while keeping the camera level. ?

Fade %

A gradual transition from one clip to another. With video, the clip changes from transparent to fully opaque in fade in or out. %

Rule of Thirds !

A guide for arranging the elements of a composition made by dividing the space into three equal sections both horizontally and vertically. The four points created by the intersection of lines are good places to position the subject: the horizontal lines are useful in placing the horizon. !

Pan ?

A horizontal camera pivot, right to left or left to right, from a stationary position. ?

Duration $

A length of time. For a clip, the length of time that it will play, determined by its overall length. $

Rolling edit $

A method of editing in the timeline by adjusting and trimming two adjacent clips. When you roll the cut point between the adjacent clips, the durations of the two clips oar adjusted to keep the overall program duration unchanged. Out point of the first clip is changed in tandem with the In point of the second clip so that, as one increases in duration, the other decreases to match it. See also ripple edit, slide, edit, slip, edit. $

Ripple edit $

A method of editing in the timeline so that when new material is inserted, or existing material is deleted, other material is adjusted to fit. In a ripple edit, the change ripples through the rest of the material, as the existing clips slide apart to make room for the new material, or slide together to fill a gap. $

Marker $

A placeholder used to make a specific timecode in a sequence. Use to keep track of changes, events, or synchronization points in a longer sequence. You can use the in and out point markers to mark a clip to be captured from a source tape, to mark part of a clip to be trimmed, or to mark a portion of the timeline to be played. $

Out point $

A placeholder used to mark a specific time code as the end point of a segment in a longer sequence. $

In point $

A placeholder used to mark a specific time code as the starting point of a segment in a longer sequence. $

PRPROJ *

A proprietary, lossless file format used by Adobe Premiere Pro. *

Rough cut $

A quick assembly of raw clips to approximate the desired final program . As a first step in editing, arranging a collection of clips in the desired order as a storyboard of the production. $

Extreme Wide Shot !

A short which the subject is not visible: often used as the first shot in a new scene to provide context and orient views to the overall setting and surroundings. !

Cut-In Shot !

A shot in which shows another part of the subject. !

Cut-away Shot !

A shot in which shows something other than the subject: often used to add information to the scene. !

Over-the-Shoulder Shot !

A shot in which shows something other than the subject: often used to add information to the scene. !

Wide Shot !

A shot in which the subject takes up the full frame. !

Point-of-View Shot !

A shot in which the video camera assumes a subjects view and viewers see what the subject sees. !

Medium Shot !

A shot which shows some part of the subject in more detail. !

Letterbox @

A technique used to display a widescreen video image on a standard television display. The widescreen image fills the width of the screen, with black bars above and below it. @

Close-Up Shot !

A tightly framed camera shot in which part of the subject takes up the entire frame. !

Extreme Close-Up Shot !

A tightly framed shot that zooms in a show extreme detail: often used to show emotion. !

Fine cut $

A video that is essentially complete. It is an attempt to achieve picture lock meaning that no more changes to the shot selection or the duration of the shots will be made. This version is done, but may lock some polish. The goal is to get the client to make any final requests while the editorial team begins final audio mixing and any tweaks to color correction and grading. Final graphics and other elements are generally placed. This is the cut that needs final change requests made and the clients last chance for budgeting change orders. $

Dissolve %

A video transition in which one video clip fades into the next. %

Wipe %

A video transition in which the new video physically moves into the frame while displacing the old video. %

Transition %

A visual effect to segue from the end of one clip or scene and the start of the next. %

Tracking ?

Lateral camcorder movement that travels with a moving subject. The camcorder should maintain a related distance from the subject. ?

4:3 @

Standard aspect ratio used for television: one third wider than it is high (1.33:1). @

Edit Line $

The current editing point in the timeline, as displayed in the monitor window and used for inserts and deletes. Often shown by a triangle control in the time ruler with a vertical line down through the timeline tracks. $

Look/Leading Room !

The empty space purposely left in front of the subject to look or move into. !

Final cut $

The goal is that all changes and minor improvements to picture and sound have been made. $

Aspect Ratio @

The shape of an image or frame, expresses as the width-to-height ratio. Widescreen film uses a 16.9 aspect ratio (1.78:1), wheres standard television uses 4:3 aspect ratio. @

Trim $

To cut out a segment of a clip by removing frames from the beginning and/or end. To adjust the in or Out points of a clip to identify the portion to be used in the final production. $

Render ^

To generate a video production in its final form. ^

Shuttle $

To move rapidly through a program. $

Jog $

To move slowly through a program. $

Scrub $

To play a program in the timeline by dragging the edit line. $

Export ^

To save your production to a file or to an external video device. ^

Cut %

To switch instantly from one clip to another. A video cut appears suddenly without any other kind of transition effect. %

Zoom ?

Variance of focal length from wide angle to telephoto, or vice versa, in one continuous move. "Zoom in" and "Zoom out" are common terms. ?

Tilt ?

Vertical camcorder rotation from a single axis, as on a tripod. ?

16:9 @

Widescreen aspect ratio used for film; almost twice as wide as it is high (1,78:1). @
