Quadrant

One of four sections of the coordinate plane defined by the intersection of the horizontal and vertical axes.

Counting Numbers

The numbers used to count; the members of the set {1,2,3,4,5,...}. Also called natural numbers.

Line Plot/Dot Plot

a measure of variability that describes how much the data values are spread out from the mean

prime factorization

a number expressed as a product of primes

prime number

a number greater than 1 with only two factors, 1 and itself

power

a number that can be written using exponents

exponent

a number that shows how many times the base should be multiplied

term

a number, a variable, or the product of a number and one or more variables

base of a prism

a pair of parallel polygonal faces that are the same shape and size

vertex of a solid

a point where three or more edges meet

kite

a quadrilateral with two pairs of adjacent sides that are equal in length

unit rate

a rate in which the comparison is to 1 unit

percent

a ratio that compares a number to 100

formula

a rule that uses variables to relate two or more quantities

rate

a special type of ratio that compares quantities with unlike units of measure

frequency table

a table that shows the number of times of a value or values

net

a two-dimensional pattern that can fold to make a three-dimensional figure

unit price

a unit rate that gives the price of one item

composite number

a whole number greater than 1 with more than two factors

interquartile range IQR

the difference between the first and third quartiles

box plot

the distribution of data set by 5 boundary points along a number line; separates data into 4 sections

greatest common factor (GCF)

the greatest number that is a factor of all numbers

mode

the item(s) that occur the most frequently

equivalent ratios

ratios that express the same relationship

substitution

replace a variable with a number to evaluate an expression

estimate

rounding numbers or decimals that are easier to mentally add, subtract, multiply or divide

evaluate

Positive Integer

Any integer with a + symbol in front and greater than zero.

Negative Integer

Any integer with a − symbol in front and are less than zero.

quotient

the answer to a division problem

the answer to a subtraction problem

Rational Number

A number that can be written in the form a/b or -a/b, where "a" is a whole number and "b" ≠ 0. Examples: 29, ¾, 0.78

Coordinate Plane

A plane that is divided into four regions by a horizontal line (x-axis) and vertical line (y-axis).

Integer

All whole numbers (both positive and negative) and zero.

ratio

A relationship in which for every x units of one quantity there are y units of another quantity.

polyhedron

A three-dimensional figure with faces that are polygons

discount

The amount by which the regular price of an item is reduced

Absolute Value

The distance between a number and zero; can never be negative

x-axis

The horizontal axis that passes through the origin.

y-axis

The vertical axis that passes through the origin.

Origin

This is the point where the number lines of the coordinate plane intersect. It is at the point, (0,0).

Opposites

Two numbers that are the same distance from zero on a number line but in opposite directions. For example 6 and -6.

least common multiple (LCM)

the least multiple, besides zero, shared by all of the numbers

median

the middle of a set of numerical data

coefficent

the number part of a term that contains a variable

base

the number that is repeatedly multiplied in exponential form

addends

the numbers that add together to make a sum

bases

the top and bottom of a prism

Division Property of Equality

the two sides of an equation stay equal when both sides of the equation are divided by the same nonzero number

Multiplication Property of Equality

the two sides of an equation stay equal when both sides of the equation are multiplied by the same number

Addition Property of Equality

the two sides of an equation stay equal when the same amount is added to both sides of the equation

Subtraction Property of Equality

the two sides of an equation stay equal when the same amount is subtracted from both sides of the equation

Ordered Pair

two numbers used to locate a point on a coordinate plan listed in a specific order (x,y)
