From Saint Domingue, the represented people of European decent wanted to be a free state. The represented people of color wanted the same rights as white people. The majority of the people of Saint Domingue were not represented. Saint Domingue being represented showed that is was considered as a genuine part of France.

They did this because the newly freed class was fed up with their harsh treatment and wanted to be free and they needed plots of their own.
