Covenant of Grace

A Christian believer could gain salvations (be saved from sins) through direct communications with God. People believed it freed them from performing good works in order to earn salvation.

Mary Dryer

A Quaker who was also banished from the colony for believing in Hutchinson's words. Was a religious nonconformist. Was executed in Boston 20 years later.

Anne Hutchinson's father. An Anglican clergyman who was imprisoned twice for rejecting Church of England Dogma. 13 Childred with Bridget Dryden, Anne was the oldest.

Anne Hutchinson's husband. Affluent business man in England, supported Anne's religious beliefs. In MA he entered textile trade. Very successful led family into prominent position in the colony.

Brother in law of Anne, MA clergyman who promoted the Covenant of Grace. Banished from the colony in November 1637.

Besides religion why was Anne a threat?

Her accusers were also concerned about the impact of her teachings on the social structure of the colony. Labeled as an anarchist (one who rebels against any authority). Some believed she was a witch.

Joseph Weld (of Roxbury)

Man who Anne was placed under custody with when was banished from the colony. He tried to get rid of her rebellious religion words when he had custody of her.

John Winthrop

Puritan governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. Removed Hutchinson followers from office.

John Cotton

Puritan preacher, Covenant of Grave and Covenant Works. Quoted by Anne. Later in 1637 he leaves the Hutchinson side and sided with the church (did not want to sacrifice his religious beliefs and his power in the colony).

What happened to Anne after the trial?

She moved into a settlement on the Island of Aquidneck in Narragansett Bay. Followed by 80 families that were also banished. In 1642 husband died and moved with her 6 children to the Dutch colony of New Netherlands (New York), settled in Pelham Bay Park (now Bronx in NYC). Following year Anne and five of her children were killed by Native Americans.

Who heavily influenced Anne's rebellious spirit and contempt for authority?

She was influenced by her father because of him being imprisoned twice for rejecting church dogma.

Anne Hutchinson

Strong woman who had different beliefs in the Puritan religion(believed that faith in God was enough for salvation), created a division between her followers in MA from the normal Puritans. Inspired by John Cotton. Later charged and banished from MA bay colony.

Charges against Anne Hutchinson

Traducing the ministers and their ministry and undermining the ministers of this country. As well as Violating laws that forbade her as a woman, to teach men or people older than herself. Countered each accusation by saying she did not have to answer the court, only God.
