- predict what the results would be if mRNA were radioactively labeled instead of polypeptides. Give reasoning to your predictions.

- The mRNA is produced and transported to the cytosol where it interacts with a free cytosolic ribosome. From there SRP (signal receptor protein) transports the mRNA to the ER. From the ER it continues on to the secretion process. I predict this because...

ONE ultimate destination for a protein produced on an attached ribosome, and one general function of the protein -

- cell membrane is the destination - function is to be a surface receptor

ONE ultimate destination for a protein produced on an unattached ribosome, and one general function of the protein -

- destination is the cytosol - function is make microfilaments

diagram to show the path of a protein in a eukaryotic cell from its formation to its secretion -

- nucleus - Rough endoplasmic reticulum - Golgi apparatus

- using the experimental results, describe the pathway that secretory proteins take from their synthesis to their release from the cell. - predict what the results would be if mRNA were radioactively labeled instead of polypeptides. Give reasoning to your predictions.

- proteins seem to start in the nucleus, travel down to the rough ER, and later travel through the golgi apparatus. The proteins are later secreted from the cell at the 30 minute marker. - The mRNA is produced and transported to the cytosol where it interacts with a free cytosolic ribosome. From there SRP (signal receptor protein) transports the mRNA to the ER. I predict this because mRNA is very specific in its track.

- describe 3 different types of R groups that might be present in a protein. - for each of the R groups properties, describe how that property will affect the folding of a protein.

Hydrophobic amino acids are not stable when in contact with water. There are about ten non polar amino acids with hydrophobic R groups. Hydrophilic R groups ionize at various PH's to produce a chemical structure that has either a positive or negative charge, they are stable in water. Charged amino acids can be either positively charged or negatively charged, a positive charge attracts a negative charge, and therefore stabilizes the whole molecule a tiny bit more. Hydrophobic amino acids will make the fold so that they are shielded from the solvent. Hydrophilic amino acids face away from the hydrophobic core. The charged amino acids bond together and look as if the fold has a shadow almost because they sit on top of one another when bonded.
