Describe the relationship between the population density and petroleum use shown in the graph.

*As population density increases, petroleum consumption decreases and as population density decreases, petroleum consumption increases* A greater population density means that people don't have to travel as far for their job, the grocery store, or the mall. This results in a lower consumption of petroleum to fuel the cars driven whereas a lower population density means people have to travel greater distances to get to their job which results in a higher consumption of petroleum.

Discuss two human health effects associated with urban sprawl.

Driving Accidents- Urban sprawl separates a persons home from their work which makes them more prone to accidents because they travel more. Disease Reduction- Disease spreads slower because people aren't so densely populated as much as they would be in the city.

Describe one practical way to increase food production within urban areas.

Green roofs on top of apartment complexes abundant with edible vegetation doesn't intrude on people's land as much as a plantation/field would in an urban area.

Describe two methods to reduce harmful effects on wildlife populations from highways and urban sprawl.

-Highway fencing would contribute to an extreme loss of wildlife death on the roadways. -Defined reserves where wildlife resides and isn't intruded on by apartment complexes or supermarkets.

Describe two steps a municipality could take to encourage smart growth in order to limit urban sprawl.

-Improve the quality of life in the city making it more appealing to more people and building apartment high rises so the people can live in them and not intrude on much of the parks/bike paths/walking trails. -Tax incentives being that people living in the inner city don't have to pay as high of a tax rate as people living in suburban areas do.

Describe two causes of urban sprawl.

Urban Decay- Money and infrastructure lack in the inner city which makes living there undesirable. Increased Prosperity- People seek better schooling systems outside of the city where Urban Blight may occur. Cleaner air and less pollution of all sorts is decreased in suburban areas.
