Universal white manhood suffrage

Universal manhood suffrage is a form of voting rights in which all adult males within a political system are allowed to vote, regardless of income, property, religion, or any other qualification besides race.

Andrew Jackson

The first president of the United States that was a member of the Democrat Party. He emphasized the common man.

General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (and Mexican Independence from Spain)

A Mexican-born Spaniard (creole | criollo people) who fought to defend royalist New Spain and then for Mexican independence. He served as a Mexican politician and general.

Black Hawk War of 1832

A brief conflict between the United States and Native Americans led by Black Hawk, a Sauk leader.

Panic of 1837/Specie Circular

A financial crisis in the United States that touched off a major recession that lasted until the mid-1840s. The blame for this event was placed on the fact that Jackson did not recharter the National Bank.

Albany Regency

A group of politicians who controlled the New York state government between 1822 and 1838. It was instituted by Martin Van Buren, who remained its dominating spirit for many years.

Whigs

A political party active in the middle of the 19th century in the United States. Four Presidents belonged to the Party while in office.

"Eaton Affair"

An affair among the wives of the cabinet members under Jackson's presidency.

Indian Removal Act/Trail of Tears

Andrew Jackson's decision to relocate the Native Americans in Florida and Georgia despite the Supreme Court's declaration that the natives had the constitutional rights to remain there.

Bank War

Andrew Jackson's decision to veto the rechartering of the National Bank.

Andrew Jackson's unofficial presidential cabinet.

Chief Justice Taney changed the supreme court emphasis towards state's rights. Ruled that a state could repeal a business contract if that contract was not in the best interest of the community.

Henry Clay

He ran for the presidency in 1824, 1832 and 1844, while also seeking his party's nomination in 1840 and 1848. However, he was unsuccessful in all of his attempts to reach his nation's highest office. Despite his presidential losses, Clay remained a dominant figure in the Whig Party, which he helped found in the 1830s.

Daniel Webster

He was United States Secretary of State twice, under Presidents William Henry Harrison and John Tyler.

Election of 1828

It featured a rematch between incumbent President John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Jackson, who won the election by a large margin.

John Calhoun

John Caldwell Calhoun was an American statesman and political theorist from South Carolina, and the seventh Vice President of the United States under Andrew Jackson.

John Quincy Adams formed a deal with Henry Clay with the condition that Clay would be appointed Secretary of State so that Adams could become president.

Cherokee Nation vs Georgia

The Cherokee Nation sought a federal injunction against laws passed by the U.S. state of Georgia depriving them of rights within its boundaries, but the Supreme Court did not hear the case on its merits.

Nullification Crisis

The Nullification Crisis ensued after South Carolina declared that the federal Tariffs of 1828 and 1832 were unconstitutional and therefore null and void within the sovereign boundaries of the state.

The Second Party System is a name for the political party system in the United States during the 1800s.

The average American was placed at the center of attention instead of the wealthy during Jackson's presidency.

Martin Van Buren

This person's inability as president to deal with the deep economic depression following the Panic of 1837 and with the surging Whig Party led to his defeat in the 1840 election.
