Compare and contrast how the Greeks and Egyptians depict figures in their sculptures. *Use vocab words!

The egyptians depict their figures as stoic and distant as they are dead to the world, while the greek statues faces are often lively. Greek sculptures are usually contraposto, meaning top half of body is twisted or facing another direction as bottom as seen in Aphreditoe of Knidos, rather in the state of Khafre, his body is face forward. This is due to egyptians scultures being a depiction of them in the afterlife, while greek were a depiction of how they were when alive. Similarly, both scultures could be at graves and burial sights for the figure depicted in the sculpture.

Critique the artwork from the Middle Ages, Good Shepard . Use the four steps of critique , vocabulary terms you have learned from the class thus far and any information you have learned about this piece. This short essay question should be at least several paragraphs long and clearly show me that you understand the critique process as well as artwork from this era.

This image is a mosaic from the middle ages and is a depiction of Jesus Christ. In the photo, Good Shephard, showcases a man in the middle sitting on stairs, wearing a long-sleeved, gold gown that has two blue vertical stripes that stretch the entire length of the gown. He also had a purple shawl or piece of cloth on his lap and shoulder. He is holding what golden cross, approximately the same height as himself. On both sides of him there are 3 white animals, likely lambs leading to 6 lambs in total. There are small depictions of grass in the foreground of the image, and throughout the background. The aforementioned description is continued in a semicirculular boarder. The pattern of the board mosaic utilization of the complematary colors of blue and gold embellish the painting with a scence of royalty and fineness. This is repeated as the robe of the man in the middle uses the same color duo, this allows for the man to stand out as the focal point. Additionally, as the lambs heads and body are faced toward the main in the middle, they serve as implied guidelines for the viewer to also pay the most attention to the man. The piece would be considered a symmetrical balance as the weight is evenly dispersed throughout the mosaic, specifically with the three lambs on each side of the man. As their was a previous depiction of this scene from the Old Testament but in Romanesque style, I believe the artist purpose appears to be showcasing Christ through the early middle age standards, i.e as a member of royalty and someone of high standard. Thus, I feel the artist was substanianlly affective as due to usage of the color gold and purple, the royal and regal status of the man is noted and emphasized. Additionally, as the lamb look towards him and seem at peace, it showcases their affinity to him which enforces his kind hearted character. I am not the hugest fan of the middle age style of painting, but I do really like the usage of color in this piece. I feel like color was the driving force of the symbolism and message in this piece, and that it would be a weaker piece without it.
