In other words, how might Beowulf have failed in his role as king by fighting the dragon? It was very brave/bold of him to go into a fight knowing that he was most likely going to loose. He failed by being a king for choosing to die and leave his people with no way to defend themselves. He knew he was leaving along with their protector and still left them with despair.
