When does it occur?

Plants Respiration is always occurring in plants; plants are continuously taking in oxygen and giving off carbon dioxide and water in the mitochondria.

Why is it important?

Respiration is very important as it involves the breaking down of food to produce energy. It also helps provide required oxygen for the cells and to expel out the toxic carbon dioxide out of the cells.

Where does it occur?

Respiration occurs in the mitochondria and cytoplasm of cells where the conversion of "food" molecules into ATP. Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins can all be used as fuels in cellular respiration, but glucose is most commonly.

Aerobic respiration

a process in the mitochondria by which a cell uses O2 to "burn" molecules and release energy The reaction: C6H12O6 + 6O2 >> 6CO2 + 6H2O Note: this reaction is the opposite of photosynthesis Aerobic respiration occurs in most cells. Anaerobic respiration (glycolysis)

The reaction: Glucose -> lactic acid + energy/ C6H12O6 -> ____ + ATP Anaerobic respiration occurs in bacteria, yeasts, some prokaryotes, erythrocytes (red blood cells), and in muscle cells. Produces lactic acid (in lactic acid fermentation but not in alcoholic fermentation) Reaction only occurs in animals.
