Know what is behind you

-Look over your shoulder -Reduce speed, take a quick glance at mirrors when turning -heavier cars can pick up speed quickly downhill

Changing lanes

-check your side and rearview mirrors for traffic approaching from behind -use turn signal -check for other drivers moving to the same lane -quickly glance over your should and check for any drivers in your blind spot just before you switch lanes -if you are driving on a multi-lane highway, stay in the right lane if you are driving slower than surrounding traffic

Legal U-Turns

A U-turn is turning your vehicle around in the street to go back the way you came. To make a U-turn, signal and use the far left lane or the center left turn lane. You may make a legal U-turn: • Across a double yellow line when it is safe and legal. • In a residential district: - If there are no vehicles approaching you within 200 feet. - Whenever a traffic sign, light, or traffic signal light protects you from approaching vehicles. • At an intersection on a green traffic signal light or green arrow, unless a "No Uturn" sign is posted. • On a divided highway, only if an opening is provided in the center divider.

How well can you stop?

At 55 mph,it takes about 400 feet to react and bring your vehicle to a complete . At 35 mph, it takes about 210 feet to react and bring your vehicle to a complete stop

Passing lanes

Before passing look ahead for road conditions and traffic. NEVER travel off road to pass!

Watch for hazards

Check your rear view mirrors every 2-5 seconds so you know the position of vehicles near you

Choosing a lane

Drive in the lane with smoothest flow of traffic. Don't weave in and out of traffic!

Drive into these areas to allow cars behind you to pass especially if you are driving too slowly.

Right turn against a red traffic signal light

Signal and stop for a red traffic signal light at the marked limit line. If there is no limit line, stop before entering the crosswalk. If there is no crosswalk, stop before entering the intersection. You may turn right if there is no sign to prohibit the turn. Yield to pedestrians, motorcyclists, bicyclists, or other vehicles moving on their green traffic signal light.

Bicycle lanes

Some roads have pavement markings that show lanes specifically designated for the exclusive use of bicycles or for shared use.

Light rail transit vehicle crossings

The same rules apply to light-rail transit vehicle crossings as to train crossings. Do not proceed across the tracks until you can see clearly in both directions and are sure there are no light-rail transit vehicles or trains coming. Do not go around or under any lowered gate. *NOTE:* Light-rail transit vehicles are very quiet and accelerate more quickly than trains

Near Railroad Tracks

The speed limit is 15 mph within 100 feet of a railroad crossing where you cannot see the tracks for 400 feet in both directions. You may drive faster than 15 mph if the crossing is controlled by gates, a warning signal, or a flag man.

Business or residential districts

The speed limit is 25 mph, unless otherwise posted.
