elevation

They derive from the Latin terms with similar meanings. elevation refers to movement in an inferior direction, the opposite of elevation.

adduction

adduction movement of a limb toward the midline of the body. the opposite of addiction is abduction.

circumduction

circumduction refers to a conical movement of a body part, such as a ball and socket joint or the eye. circumduction is a combination of flexion, extension, adduction and abduction.

Dorsiflexion

dorsiflexion is the movement of the foot upwards, so that the foot is closer to the shin. For a movement to be considered dorsiflexion, the foot should be raised upward between 10 and 30 degrees. Dorsiflexion uses the muscles in the front part (anterior) of the foot.

Horizontal abduction

horizontal abduction is the movement of the arms from horizontally across the body. Starting from a position where the arms are straight to the front (shoulders flexed at 90 degrees), moving in the transverse plane to end I. a position where the arms are straight out to the side (flexed 90 degrees).

Extention

motion, the process of movement, is described using specific anatomical terms. Motion includes movement of organs, joints, limbs, and specific sections of the body. the terminology used describes this motion according to its direction relative to the anatomical position of the joints.

Protraction

protraction is movement of a body part in the anterior direction, i.e. being drawn forward. The movement of protraction is the opposite of the movement of retraction.

Horizontal adduction

"horizontal adduction" is adduction (bone moving to midline) in the horizontal plane. ... "adduction" is a bone moving closer to the midline in the frontal plane.

Depression

definition of depression in the context of movement of the body: Depression is the downward movement of structures of the body e.g. depression of a shoulder joint lowers the corresponding arm vertically downwards. the movement of depression is the opposite of the movement of elevation.

proximal

definition of proximal. 1 : situated close to : proximate. 2 : next to or nearest the point of attachment or origin, a central point, or the point of view especially : located toward the omcenter of the body - compare distal. 3 : of, relating to, or being the medial and distal surfaces of a tooth.

external rotation

external rotation (or lateral rotation) is rotation away from the centre of the body. internal and external rotation of the arms (humerus) occurs T the shoulders, causing the elbow to rotate. a movement at a joint that causes rotation of a limb or part of a limb around it's long axis away from the midline of the body, e.g. external rotation at the elbow turns the forearm outwards, bringing the palm of the hand to face forward, or the whole arm can be externally rotated from the hip but the knee does not allow external rotation of the lower leg alone. opposite of internal rotation.

internal rotation

in anatomy, internal rotation (also known as medial rotation) is rotation towards the centre of the body. external rotation (or lateral rotation) is rotation away from the centre of the body. internal and external rotation of the arms (hunerus) occurs at the shoulders, causing the elbow to rotate. eexternal rotation.

Inversion

inversion and eversion refer to movements that tilt the sole of the foot away from (eversion) or towards (inversion) the midline of the body. Eversion is the movement of the sole of the foot away from the median plane. inversion is the movement of the foot away from the median plane. inversion is the movement if the sole towards the median plane.

lateral

lateral: 1. in anatomy, the side of the body or a body part that is farther from the middle or center of the body. typically, lateral refers to the outer side of the body part, but it is also used to refer to the side of a body part.

Abduction

medical definition of abduction. abduction: the movement of a limb away from the midline of the body. the opposite of abduction is adduction.

Medial

medical definition of medial. medial: 1. pertaining to the middle; in or toward the middle; nearer the middle of the body. medial is as opposed to lateral. for example, the medial side of the knee is the side closest to the other knee whereas the lateral side of the knee is outside of the knee

Flexion

motion, the process of movement, is described using specific anatomical terms. motion includes movement of organs, joints, limbs, and specific sections of the body. the terminology used describes this motion according to its direction relative to the anatomical position of the joints.

Eversion

planar movement of a body segment, so that the distal part turns away from the midline foot eversion frontal-plane movement of the foot at subtalar and midtarsal joints, by hindfoot rotation (along its longitudinal axis), so that the sole of the foot I'd directed away from the midline of the body hil eversion transverse-plane movement of lower limb at hip joint by leg rotation about its longitudinal axis, so that the patella is directed away from the midline of the body.

plantar flexion

plantar flexion is a movement in which the top of your foot points away from your leg. you use plantar flexion whenever you stand on the tip of your toes

Supination

rotation of the forearm and hand so that the palms faces forward or upward and the radius lies parallel to the ulna also: a corresponding movement of the foot and leg in which the foot rolls outward with an elevated arch so that in walking the foot tends to come down on its outer edge the position resulting from supination

Pronation

rotation of the hand and forearm so that the palm faces backwards or downwards rotation of the medial bones in the midtarsal region of the foot inward and downward so that in walking the foot tends to come down on its inner margin

Retraction

short definition of retraction (in the context of a term to describe movement of a body part in the posterior direction, i.e. being drawn backwards. the movement of retraction is the opposite of the movement of protraction.

distal

situated away from the point of attachment or orginal or a central point as a located away from the center of the body the distal end of a bone - compare proximal sense 1a.
