links the nervous system to the endocrine system via the pituitary gland. Damage to the hypothalamus can cause potential growth problems, irregular body temperature, irregular hunger/thirst, irregular sex hormones, and irregular emotional response to stimuli. Motor Cortex
major function is to generate neural impulses that control the execution of movement. Possible side effects of injury to the motor cortex would be paralysis, and loss of muscle control in some/all parts of the body. Reticular Formation
major functions are arousal, attention, cardiac reflexes, motor functions, regulates awareness, relays nerve signals to the cerebral cortex and is involved in sleep. If this part of the brain is damaged it can result in death, coma, fatigue, changes in sexual arousal, disrupted sleep patterns, and it can inhibit your ability to wake up. Slogan: Wake Up!

Function: As it connects the two halves of the brain together, it facilitates all interaction between hemispheres. Damage can result in the inability to transfer information from one side of the body to the other. A Corpus Callosotomy will make your brain an antisocial ninny.

Function: Processes sensory information and sends that information out. Also deals with functions of sleep and wakefulness. Relay sensory info to the cerebral cortex damage can result in permanent coma. Damage to the thalamus = Permanent Paralysis
Occipital Lobe
Function: Responsible for all visual processing and transmission. Effects of damage include, hallucinations, loss of vision, It's already dark in your head, so when you shut your eyes your occipital lobe is just like "wtf where am I"
Somatosensory Cortex
Function: Responsible for receiving and interpreting the body's sense of touch. Because this cortex manages such a large part of the body, damage to it can result in a very wide range of outcomes. Victims can suffer from numbness, paresthesia, seizures, and total loss of feeling in any part of the body.
Hippocampus
Functions: Memory, spatial navigation, Can result in hyperactivity, and the loss of the ability to retain new information if damaged. Damaged Hippocampus = Dumb as a sandwich
Brainstem
Functions: Regulates consciousness. Manages the transfer of all information/signals being transmitted from the brain to the rest of the body and vise versa. It is also integral in cardiovascular and respiratory function. Damage to this part of the brain can result in coma, loss of movement, and even death. Motto: Brainstem is love, brainstem is life.
Cerebral Cortex
responsible for memory, attention, perceptual awareness, thought, language, and consciousness. Injury to this part of the brain can cause impairments in perception (vision, audition, olfaction, proprioception), Language, memory, decision making and basically anything depending on where on the cerebral cortex the damage occurs. Wernicke's area
It contains neurons involved in the comprehension of speech. If damaged can cause impaired speech development, or wernicke's aphasia. Slogan: without wernicke's area, you can't comprehend the word wernicke's. or you didn't study.
