C.6 Design & Apply Discontinuous Measurement Procedures (e.g., interval recording, time sampling) - Acquisition
For behaviors that are largely continuous or do not have clear onset or offset, if your goal is to reduce behavior, the behavior should be measured using
Partial-interval recording.
The time TIME SAMPLING refers to a variety of methods for observing and recording
a sampling of behavior during intervals or at specified moments in time.
With partial-interval recording, you record the behavior if it occurs
at any time during the interval.
With momentary time sampling, you record the behavior if it occurs
at the end of the interval.
The whole-interval method underestimates the actual duration of behavior
because rarely do occurrences of the behavior occur throughout the entire interval.
The partial-interval method overestimates the actual occurrence of behavior because
behavior may occur during a small part of the interval but the entire interval is scored.
Time sampling recording procedures are particularly will suited for
behavior that do not have a discrete start and end
Whole-interval recording is often used when measuring
behavior that occur at such a high rate that it is difficult to distinguish one response from the next.
Whole-interval recording is often used when measuring
continuous behavior
When using whole-interval recording, your data are more likely to underestimate the actual rate or duration of the target behavior when the observation period is divided into
longer intervals.
When using partial-interval recording, your data are more likely to overestimate the actual rate or duration of the target behavior when measuring
low-frequency behavior.
The teacher records when a student is reading by marking a plus for each 5-minute interval where the student is looking at the book page at the end of the interval. Which sampling procedure is the teacher using?
momentary time sampling
Time sampling data
more closely estimate the amount of behavior when intervals are short, and observations are conducted frequently.
When using a partial-interval recording procedure, indicate an occurrence only if the behavior
occurs at any time during the interval.
The teacher records when a student is reading by marking a plus for each 5-minute interval where the student has been looking at the book page for any amount during the interval. Which sampling procedure is the teacher using?
partial-interval recording
With whole-interval recording, you record the behavior if it occurs
throughout the entire interval.
When using momentary time sampling
use interval that are either variable or fixed.
Using a momentary time sampling procedure, it is necessary to observe
very briefly at the end of the interval.
For behaviors that are largely continuous or do not have clear onset or offset, if your goal is to increase the duration of the behavior, the behavior should be measured using
whole-interval recording
The teacher records when a student is reading by marking a plus for each 5-minute interval where the student has been looking at the book page for the entire interval. Which sampling procedure is the teacher using?
whole-interval recording
