Canned Food Presentation
Slide 1: WHO CREATED IT
nicolas appert is the guy who created the idea for canned food. He was born on november 17, 1749 in france. Before Nicolas invented canned food, he was a chef. He came up with the idea for canned food in 1810.
Slide 4: NAPOLEON'S ARMY
At first, the can was only used for militaries purposes. Napoleons army needed the canned food to survive the winter without having spoiled food. But after a while, canned food started working its way into the American family. It was pictured as the perfect food for the average American family.
Slide 8:FUN FACTS
Cans participated in A-Bomb civil defense tests in Nevada in order to test whether canned foods were safe to eat after nuclear explosions (they were safe) Canned foods are actually good for years past their expectation date. The expiration dates are simply there in the hopes that you will throw out the product and buy more. 200 billion cans of food are manufactured in the world each year. A can of food left by Sir John Franklin in the Arctic in 1845 was found to still be edible in 1939
Slide 6: COMMERCIAL CANNING
In 1813 John Hall and Bryan Dorkin opened the first commercial canning factory in England. In 1825, America had caught onto the canned food rage, and Kensett receives an American patent for tin plated cans. Canned ham, also known as SPAM was introduced in 1926. By 1830 people have started selling biscuits and cakes in decorated cans.
Slide 2: NAPOLEON'S NEED
Napoleon had a contest to see who could come up with a new way to preserve food. His army needed portable food that survived the winter. He offerd whoever won the contest 12,000 franc, or what would now be $12,683 US dollars.
Slide 5: THE PATENT
Peter Durand was the guy who actually made the patent for the first tin can. The patent was then approved by King George in the August of 1810. So Nicolas Appert made the first canned food, but Peter Durand patented the first tin can.
Slide 3: PROGRESSION OF THE FOOD CAN DESIGN
The first idea Nicolas came up with, was to have a a glass jar, put the food item in it. Then, he would take all the air out of the jar, and seal the whole bottle with a cork, wire, and sealing wax. The jar was then boiled in hot water for several hours. The second design made, was a tin can, because the glass jars would sometimes break. Tin cans were also cheaper than glass jars.
Slide 7: WHO IT HELPS
The invention of canned food helped soldiers get good fresh food into their stomach's so they could fight better and longer. After natural disasters, people needed reliable food to eat if they didn't have a home. On top of this, you could have food rives, and not have to worry about the food expiring.
Slide : WHERE CANS ARE TODAY
These are examples of different brands of canned food that have evolved over the years. Chef Boyardee was introduced in 1928. Campbell's soup is much older, and was founded in 1869. SPAM, however was introduced much closer to Chef Boyardee. SPAM made its appearance in 1937. The StarKist company mostly known by its mascot Charlie, was founded in 1918.
