PULMONARY EMBOLISM
SYMPTOMS: 1/2 of people don't have symptoms. Those that do experience shortness of breath, chest pain, or coughing up blood. TREATMENT: Focuses on preventing future pulmonary embolisms. OTHER: Sudden blockage in a lung artery (blood clot).
POPLITEAL ARTERY ENTRAPMENT SYNDROME
SYMPTOMS: Aching pain, numbness, and tiredness or cramping in the calf when they exercise. TREATMENT: Surgery and physical therapy. OTHER: Occurs mostly in male athletes under the age of 30, who play soccer, football, and rugby.
CARDIOMYOPATHY
SYMPTOMS: Breathlessness , swollen legs and feet, and a bloated belly. TREATMENT: Include breathlessness , swollen legs and feet, and a bloated belly. OTHER: Causes include: lack of blood flow to the heart muscle. excess alcohol consumption, nutritional or hormonal imbalances.
ABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSM
SYMPTOMS: Can be symptomless, but pain in the abdomen, back, or sides can appear and could be signs of a rupture. TREATMENT: Small ones need only be monitored, but larger ones or those growing too quickly will require surgery. OTHER: Caused by an enlargement of the Aorta which needs to be looked for by a professional. Common to older men and smokers.
ATHEROSCLEROSIS
SYMPTOMS: Chest pain on exertion, heart attack or stroke depending on severity. TREATMENT: Healthy diet, exercise, no smoking, and medications. OTHER: Is preventable by not smoking, and not drinking alcohol in excess.
INFLAMMATORY HEART DISEASE
SYMPTOMS: Chest pain or chest discomfort, shortness of breath, swelling and/or edema, liver congestion, abnormal heartbeat, sudden death (in young adults), and fever. TREATMENT: Self improvement, antibiotics, IV medications and/or vascular assist devices. OTHER: Caused by cyotoxic effects of infecting agents like viruses, and bacteria fungi.
ISCHEMIC HEART DISEASE
SYMPTOMS: Chest pain, chest pressure and shortness of breath. TREATMENT: Drug therapy, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, ARB's. OTHER: Caused by narrowed heart arteries.
BICUSPID AORTIC VALVE DISEASE
SYMPTOMS: Chest pain, shortness of breath and dizziness or fainting caused by inadequate blood flow to the brain. TREATMENT: Surgical repair of the valve must be performed immediately if severe or replacement of the valve and part of the aorta. OTHER: The defect is present at birth, but 80% of people who have this disease never even know they have it.
CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE
SYMPTOMS: Chest pain, shortness of breath, arrhythmia, heart attack, heart failure. TREATMENT: Eating less, moving more, not smoking, medication, surgery. OTHER: Leading cause of death in the United States.
CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE
SYMPTOMS: Fatigue, shortness in breath, swelling. TREATMENT: The treatment of congestive heart failure can include lifestyle modifications, addressing potentially reversible factors, medications, heart transplant, and mechanical therapies. OTHER: Congestive heart failure is a condition in which the heart's function as a pump is inadequate to meet the body's needs.
PERICARDIAL DISEASE
SYMPTOMS: Fever, fatigue, muscle aches, shortness of breath. TREATMENT: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. OTHER: Causes include: cancer, injury to the pericardium or heart from a medical procedure, heart attack, kidney failure.
ARRYTHMIAS
SYMPTOMS: Heart fluttering. TREATMENT: Removal of blood clots to prevent stroke OTHER: Also called irregular heartbeat.
MARFAN SYNDROME
SYMPTOMS: Heart murmurs, extreme nearsightedness, an abnormally curved spine, and Flat feet. TREATMENT: While there is no cure for Marfan syndrome, treatment focuses on medication and lots of therapy. OTHER: People affected by this usually don't live pasted the age of 40.
MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE
SYMPTOMS: Irregular heartbeat, palpitations, and shortness of breath. TREATMENT: Most people don't require treatment, but some cases may need medication or surgery. OTHER: Mitral valve prolapse can develop at any age.
HYPERTENSIVE HEART DISEASE
SYMPTOMS: No symptoms TREATMENT: Treatable by a medical professional OTHER: There are more than 3 million cases of this disease per year.
PERIPHERAL VASCULAR DISEASE
SYMPTOMS: Painful cramping, achiness, fatigue. TREATMENT: Stop smoking, commit to a regular exercise program that includes walking, eat a balanced diet with proper nutrition. OTHER: For many people, there are no symptoms of PVD. For others, the first signs of PVD begin slowly and irregularly.
ATRIAL SEPTAL DEFECT
SYMPTOMS: Shortness of breath, heart palpitations, fatigue, swelling in the legs, feet, or abdomen, and heart murmurs. TREATMENT: Transcatheter ASD closure, Monitoring OTHER: A birth defect that causes a hole in the wall between the heart's upper chambers (atria).
RHEUMATIC HEART DISEASE
SYMPTOMS: Shortness of breath. TREATMENT: Medication to ease inflammation of heart. OTHER: Caused by Rheumatic Fever.
CEREBROVASCULAR DISEASE
SYMPTOMS: Side of face feels numb and droops, speech difficult, and muscle weakness on one side of the body. TREATMENT: Medication; tpa, ACE inhibitor, and blood thinners. Also, aspirin, therapy, and Carotid endarterectomy. OTHER: Commonly called a stroke.
