What are two types of training objectives used in aviation training?

*Performance-based objectives*: defines what needs to be done and how it will be done. Consists of three elements:description of the skill or behavior, conditions, and criteria. *Decision-based objectives*: teach critical thinking skills such as risk management and ADM. Uses higher level learning through use of dynamic and meaningful scenarios SBT.

Describe the steps necessary in preparing a lesson plan.

1. Determine objective of lesson 2. research the subject as defined by the objective 3. determine the method of instruction and lesson plan format 4. organize the lesson and select suitable supporting material 5. Assemble training aids 6. write the lesson plan outline

Why are instructional aids useful in helping students learn?

1. Gain and hold attention of students 2. Increase students' knowledge retention 3. Provide an accurate visual image and make learning easier for the student 4. Clarify the relationships between material objects and concepts 5. Instructor's teach more in a shorter time frame

Describe the drill and practice method of teaching.

Based on learning principal of exercise where connections are strengthened through practice. Learning through repetition.

When planning a lesson, what general guidelines may be used concerning the use of instructional aids?

Clearly establish the lesson objective; be certain of what is to be communicated. Gather necessary data by researching for support material. Organize material into an outline or lesson plan. Plan should include all key points. Select ideas to be supported with instructional aids. Aids should concentrate on key points.

Define the following: course of training, curriculum, training course outline, and syllabus.

Course of training-a complete series of studies leading to attainment of a specific goal. I.e. academic degree. Curriculum-a set of courses in an are of specialization offered by an educational institution I.e. Flight Operations. Training course outline-the content of a particular course within a curriculum. Syllabus-a summary or outline of course of study that generally contains a description of each lesson, including objectives and completion standards.

What are the initial steps in planning a course of training?

Determine objectives Identify the foundation blocks of learning Design and develop blocks of learning

Explain the steps involved in the Telling-and-Doing technique of flight instructing.

Effective for teaching procedures and maneuvers. Instructor Tells- Instructor Does Student Tells-Instructor Does Student Tells-Student Does Instructor evaluates-Student Does

What is meant by the term "e-learning"?

Electronic learning, such as Boldmethod. Learner- centered, easily updated, accessible anytime/anywhere, cost competitive.

What are the five essential phases of the demonstration performance method of teaching?

Explanation Demonstration Student performance Instructor supervision Evaluation

When is the use of instructional aids appropriate?

For long segments of a technical description. When a point is complex and difficult to put in words. When instructors find themselves forming visual images. When students are puzzled by an explanation or description.

Explain the difference between instructional aids and training media.

Instructional aids—not self supporting, supplement or reinforces what is being taught. Training media—printed text, interactive computer programs, flight training devices.

The traditional organization for a lesson consists of what steps?

Introduction-consists of three elements: Attention Motivation Overview Development Conclusion

What are several common teaching methods an instructor may use to present instructional material?

Lecture method Discussion method Guided discussion method E-learning Demonstration-performance method Cooperative or group learning Drill and practice method Problem-based learning

Explain the "guided discussion" method of teaching.

Requires a level of knowledge from the student either through prior reading or lecture. Instructor sets up topic or be discussed and guides the discussion. Used to draw out what the students know.

What are the three types of problem-based instruction?

Scenario based—real-world based experiences to address training objectives in operational environment. Collaborative problem-solving—collaboration of two or more people to solve problems. Case study—a written or oral account of a real-world situation that contains a message that educates the student.

What elements should a lesson plan contain?

The lesson objective, content, schedule, equipment, instructor's actions, student's actions, and completion standards.

Explain the "demonstration performance" method of teaching.

This method is based on the principle that people learn by doing. The instructor first shows the student the correct way to perform an activity and then has the student attempt the same activity. Students observe the skill and then try to reproduce it. This method is best used for the mastery of mental or physical skills that require practice.

Describe the "problem-based" approach to teaching.

Uses problems based in real life, forcing students to come up with real-world solutions. Uses carefully constructed problems in which there is no one solution. Learners gain deeper understanding of the information.

Describe the "lecture" method of teaching.

Usually delivered to a group of students with the use of instructional aids and training devices. Useful for presentation on new material, summarizing ideas, and showing relationships between theory and practice.

What are the four teaching skills that are essential to being an effective instructor?

people skills, subject matter expertise, management skills, assessment skills
