A military confict in which Russia and Japan were fighting for dominance of Korea and Manchuria that resulted in a Japanese victory
Boxer Rebellion
Christian missionaries were spreading and were provoking anti foreign riots. The anti Christian group was nicknamed Boxer. They went on a rampage burning missionary buildings and killing missionaries and Chinese Christian converts
How did the achievements of Japan counter the Western Imperialist characterizations of Asia? How did Japan's response to the West differ from China? How and Why did Japan become an Imperialist power? What was the nature of Japanese imperialism in Korea and Taiwan?
Japan developed the country's modernization on their own. Japan was curious about the west as opposed to China. They were eager to learn new things to benefit their country. They formed a new found government. Japan wanted to compete with western countries and become an empire. They did this through western influence. Korea held a strategically important geographic position, which drew Japan to them. Japan saw Taiwan as a source of raw materials for japan's industries
Opium War
Opium is an addictive narcotic. The British were illegally exporting opium from India to China. The Chinese were experiencing a widespread addiction. The Chinese destroyed all of the opium including the opium stored in British warehouses. The British attack Hong Kong, but later they established peace. In the second war the Chinese boarded a British ship and lowered the British flag in Canton. An English warship came and bombarded the city. The Chinese then burned trading warehouses. The French joined the British. The British and the French captured the city Canton, killed the governor of the city, and established a new official. In April 1958 The French and the British arrived in British warships to Taranjin and forced China to negotiate for several new ports in western trade, foreign envoys, the right of foreign travel in China, and freedom of movement for Christian missionaries. This agreement was called the treaty of Tianjin. The importation of opium was eventually legalized

Melaya
Rich deposits of tin were found here; became the world's largest producer of plantation rubber; controlled by the British
New Imperialism
The British took control of many countries in Asia to make money off of their goods. They took control of China, and India and Africa to grow their empire. They took people from Africa to work as slaves and in their factories, they took spices from India, and silk and textiles to trade with other countries for Britain's benefit
How do you account for the new imperialism? What were the factors/motivations for Western Imperialists? What differing factors and ambitions contributed to the British takeover of Burma, the French in Vietnam, the Dutch in Indonesia. and the American in the Philippines?
The goal of the new imperialism was to expand western countries' power and to make a profit on the country's goods and exports. The British took over Burma because it was a part of India's trade route. The French's conquest of Vietnam was because of missionary propaganda and French capitalism. The Dutch East India Company had economic and political power on Java in Indonesia. The Americans want to become an empire so they held imperial power over the Philippines for expansion.
Taiping Rebellion
The greatest of uprisings against the Quing government. The Taiping ruler was Hang Xiuquan. He along with a large peasant group armed with a Christian ideology. Their mission was to overthrow the Manchus in Nianjing. They pick up massive support as they moved and captured Nianjing
Meiji Restoration
The political revolution that brought about the final collapse of the Tokugawa shogunate that ended the Edo Tokugawa period and returned control of the country to imperial rule under Mutshito ( the emperor Meiji)

1895 Sino Japanese War
Was a conflict between China and Japan. Japan was becoming a major world power which displayed the weakness of the Chinese empire. The conflict arose when China and Japan battled for supremacy of Korea
