-Examination of the social environment -presence of others on an individual's behavior, thoughts, feelings -first impression, attitude change, conformity, prejudices ex. someone that's next to you on a treadmill encourages you to run faster

-applied -testing (IQ) diagnose students academic problems -work with individuals and teachers to improve student performance in classroom -bullying, school violence, and crisis intervention

-basic research -psychological aspects of the educational process -develop theories on learning and teaching -research: improving teaching; better curricula -research for the sake of knowledge
