How you look

Apperance- first impression come from how you look, how you are dressed, gives u confidence boost, stay away from distracting clothing Body lanauage- if u use movement going to attract more attention than a speaker who stands still. avoid distracting movement don't pace Eye contact- important at looking audience in eyes. how to deal with nervousness

Be prepared- if you prepare than you cannot help but be successful Be positive- easier to be positive when engaged in constructive, practical, useful, productive work. start by believing you can give a successful speech. Visaulize- imagine giving a great performance. newberg and waldamn offer that positive imagery can reduce a negative state of mind. Anticpate- foreseeing the situation, role play, you are in charge Focus- focus on audience not yourself Gain experience- no substitute for experience,take opportunities in churches and family gathering, begin putting what you learn in this class to use.

Charasertics of good delivery

Conversational quality- talk to your audience in much the same way that you talk when you are having a conversation with another person talking with audience rather than at them. Attentiveness- focusing on the moment, being aware of and responding to your listeners needs. Immediacy- when the communicator is completely focused on the communication situation. Directness- being natural and straightforward(don't use complicated words) select a specific purpose and strong central idea.

How you sound

Volume- speak in a louder voice than you feel comfortable with, ask if ppl can hear you in the back Using a microphone-dont blow into them to see if they work, 8-12 inches away from you while you speak, test it out Pace-refers to how fast or how slowly a person speaks. if audience attention is drifting pic up your pace. pause makes a dramatic effect Inflection-refers to the change in pitch used to emphasize certain words and phrases

Extemporaneous speaking

a speaker delivers a speech from notes. might commit the main ideas of the speech to memory but will rely on notes to remember most of the speech it permits flexibility so you can adjust to the feedback of listeners. comes closet to good conversation bc you can be natural and responsive may stumble or grope for words. just rehearses it.

Visual support

devices such as charts, graphs, slides, and computer generated images holds the attention of listeners provides information in the visual channel helps audience members remember what speaker has said provides another means for supporting or illustrating content adding an attention-grasping element chance to move around assisantace in remembering their info. (65% remember with both 35% with visual aid and 10% with no visual aid)

How to reduce anxiety

dress in comfortable clothes-wear clothes you feel at ease in. speak first to get it over with. take 7 deep breaths on the way to the front of the room remember that your audience is made up people just like you move around pick out friendly faces and make contact with these people give yourself a reward- like go to does and congratulate yourself

Dealing with public speaking

involves writing out the entire speech and reading it to the audience can get a clear idea of how long it is, so its a good method. leads planned wording. should know it well enough so you can break away from it. get sound sponatoues when using one. shouldn't make it aware that you are reading off of something feedback is hard if audience is bored

Enunciation/articulation/pronuctionation

made up of articulation and pronunciation the ability to pronounce the letters in a word correctly ability to pronounce the whole world. these helps to understand others. practice this because you don't want slurring/ sound subsituion(d for th) omission)libary instead of library

How to be attentive

pick a topic thats important to you do all the work necessary to prepare the best speech possible individualize your audience members focus on the audience rather than yourself.

the chalkboard(whiteboard) the actual object models-replica of an actual object posters, diagrams, and charts organizational chart-relationships among the elements of an organization flip chart- a series of pictures, words, diagrams tables and graphs(statistical material) line graph for showing trends over a period of time. computer-generated graphic-images mimicked on a computer Videos-make own or by others. handout/powerpoint

rules for visual support

use visual support to supplement, not replace the speech show the visual support only when you are ready for it check the room to see if your visual support can be easily displaced practice with your visual support before talk to audience not the visual

Speaking from memory

writing out the entire speech and then committing it to memory word for word exact wording can be planned, phrases, sentences can be crafted can be adapted to a set inflexible time limit can create pressure, worried about forgetting, making it sound natural and spontaneous require considerable acting talent.
