Chapter 4: Ways to soothe a crying baby
Talk softly or play rhythmic sounds (lullaby)
continuous, monotonous, rhythmic sounds are better than random sounds
Swing baby in cradle, take on a stroller or car ride
gentle rhythmic motion helps baby go to sleep
lift the baby to shoulder and rock or walk
physical contact, upright posture, and motion, causes infants to become quietly alert
combine several of the other methods
play a lullaby while rocking them or driving around
if nothing else works, let baby cry for a short period
put them down and they will fall asleep
Swaddle the baby
restrict movement, increase warmth soothes baby
Massage the babies body
stroking the babies torso and limbs gently relaxes their muscles
offer a pacifier
sucking helps babies control their own level of arousal
