In England, education was reserved for only the rich aristocratic males. In New England, education was important. It was provided to train clergy. Wealthy families hired tutors. Most of the education was based on religion.

The dominant denominations in early colonial America were Anglican and Congregational. The Anglicans were located in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and part of New York. The Congregational Church, was located in all the New England colonies, except in Rhode Island.

The ethnic make up of the early colonies consisted of English, African, French Huguenots, Welsh, Dutch, Swedes, Jews, Irish, Swiss, and Scots.

13) How did politics work during the early colonial period?

The thirteen colonial governments took a variety form of government. Eight of the colonies had royal governors, who were appointed by the king. Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware were under proprietors who chose the governors. Connecticut and Rhode Island elected their own governors under self governing charters. Every colony utilized a two-house legislative body. The upper house, or council, was appointed by the crown in the royal colonies and by the proprietor in the proprietary colonies. It was chosen by the voters in the self governing colonies. The lower house, as the popular branch, was elected by the people who owned enough property to qualify as voters.
