Explanation of nebular hypothesis

According to this hypothesis, a cloud of gas and dust, called a nebula, began to contract about 4.6 billion years ago. The nebula began to take the shape of a spinning disc. During this time, collisions between dust particles and the force of gravity caused some of the matter in the nebula to clump together. As the clumps orbited the center of the nebula, they collected more dust particles in their paths. As the clumps grew larger, their gravitational pull became stronger, and they attracted even more particles until eventually, they formed the sun and planets, as shown in Figure 2. Some debris remained, however, in the form of asteroids. How did the dinosaurs become extinct?

The Age of the Dinosaurs came to a sudden end 66 million years ago in the Cretaceous Mass Extinction. Evidence shows that a large asteroid struck Earth in what is now known as Chicxulub on the Yucatán Peninsula in modern-day Mexico at the same time dinosaurs went extinct. Scientists hypothesize that the impact of the asteroid released a cloud of dust into the atmosphere, which blocked most of the sun's energy.
