Chemical Reactions
oxidation
A chemical change in which a substance combines with oxygen, as when iron oxidizes, forming rust. LOSS OF ELECTRONS.
synthesis reaction
A chemical reaction in which two or more reactants combine to produce a single product. A+B --> AB
decomposition reaction
A reaction in which a single compound breaks down to form two or more simpler substances. AB --> A+B
reduction
Any process in which electrons are added to an atom or ion (as by removing oxygen or adding hydrogen) GAINS ELECTRONS
combustion reaction
a chemical reaction that occurs when a substance reacts with oxygen, releasing energy in the form of heat and light. products are usually H2O and CO2. While reactants are usually Cx Hy O2 + O.
double-displacement reaction
a reaction in which a gas, a solid precipitate, or a molecular compound forms from the exchange of ions between two compounds. AB + CD --> AD + CB
single-displacement reaction
chemical reaction in which one element replaces another element in a compound. A +BC--> B + AC
