Chemistry chapter 11
Synthesis Reactions
2 or more simple compounds combine to create a single complicated compound. ex: A + B = AB
Balance. AgNO3 + H2S ---> Ag2S + HNO3
2AgNO3 +H2S ---> AG2S + 2HNO3
Balance . Iron (III) Chloride + Calcium Hydroxide ---> Iron(III) Hydroxide + Calcium Chloride
2FeCl3 + 3Ca(OH)2 ---> 2Fe(OH)3 + 3CaCl2
Decomposition Reactions
A complex molecule breaks down into simple ones ex: AB= A + B
Acid-Base Reactions
An acid reacts with a base, usually with products water and ionic salts
Double Displacement Reactions
Anions and cations of 2 different molecules switch places, creating 2 new compounds ex: AB + CD --> AD + CB
How did John Dalton explain Chemical reactions using his theory?
He said that atoms were rearranged to create products
Single Displacement Reactions
One element switches places with another in a compound. ex: A + BC = B + AC
Combustion Reactions
Oxygen combines with a compound to form water and carbon dioxide. Exothermic
Sulfur burns in oxygen to form sulfur dioxide. Write a skeleton equation for this reaction. Include appropriate symbols.
S(g) + O2(g) ---> SO2(g)
Write a sentence that describes this chemical reaction: Na(s) + H2O(l) ---> NaOH(aq) + H2(g)
Sodium metal and Liquid water react to create Sodium Hydroxide and Hydrogen gas
