Classification of Controlled Substances

V -Accepted for medical use -Low potential for abuse -May cause limited physical or psychological dependence compared with IV drugs -Includes drug mixtures containing limited amounts of narcotics.

Examples: Cough medicines containing limited quantity of codeine, Alkaloids, Kaolin and pectin belladonna (Donnagel), Diphenoxylate with atropine (Lomotil) [May be sold by pharmacist in some states; buyer must be 18 years old and must show identification]

I -No accepted medical use -Never prescribed for use -High potential for abuse -Possession of these drugs is illegal -Accepted for medical use but will severe restrictions -High potential for abuse -May cause severe psychological or physical dependence

Examples: Heroin, Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), marijuana, methadone (Quaalude), GHB acetylcodone

IV -Accepted for medical use -Low potential for abuse -may cause limited physical or psychological dependence compared with Schedule III drugs -Includes minor tranquilizers and hypnotics

Examples: Meprobamate (Equanil), Chloral hydrate, Rohypnol (date rate drug), Alprazolam (Xanax)

II -Accepted for medical use but with severe restriction. -High potential for abuse -May cause severe psychological or physical dependence.

Examples: Morphine, Cocaine precursors, Methylphenidate (Ritalin)

III -Accepted for medical use -Potential for abuse less than with Schedule I or II drugs -May cause moderate to low physical dependence or high psychological dependence -Includes combination drugs that contain limited amounts of narcotics or stimulants

Examples: Paregoric, acetaminophen and codeine (Tylenol with codeine), Benzphetamine, Anabolic, Fiorinal, Voranil, Empirin, Hydrocodone (Vicodin), Buprenorphine
