Friendships

Agentic friendships

Exist primarily to help achieve practical goals (Become friends with a classmate, the goal is to have additional notes) **Can change to communal.

Communal friendships

Focus primarily on sharing time, activities and emotional support (Want to go see a movie, having troubles with your roommate)

Friends that change as we move along the road of life

Nature of Friendships

Steps of the Development of Friendships

Role-Limited interaction

Begin with some form of an initial encounter. Can be planned or accidental

Trust

Confidence in the fact that friends will do what they say they will do and they will care about us as well as our welfare.

Emotional closeness

Men express their intimacy through shared experiences, women express intimacy through dialogue/talking

Friendly relations

Occur when we spend time checking out whether we could actually develop a lasting friendship with this person

Waning friendship

One or both parties stop investing in the relationship

Friends with benefits

Participants engage in sexual activity but not for the purpose of transforming the relationship into a romantic encounter

Friends of the heart

People who remain friends regardless of the distance.

Friendships

Voluntary interpersonal relationships in which the people involved like each other and enjoy each other's company

Willingness to invest

Want to be friends with people that are willing to give as much time, energy and effort that you are

Acceptance

We expect our friends to expect the positive and say negative aspects of ourselves

Support

We expect our friends to indicate their support for us by verbally telling us or nonverbally through actions.

Moving toward friendship

We work towards creating a longer term friendship, start to disclose our feelings, share our values, disclose our attitudes, talk about thoughts and interests.

Nascent friendship

When we begin to think of ourselves as friends and we work out the rules of our friendship and our relationship

Stabilized friendship

You have determined that this relationship will indeed continue, take future encounters for granted, relationship rules are unspoken, high level of trust, rules that regulate how we interact are established.
