Body language, or kinesics, consists of the gestures, movements, and mannerisms by which a person communicates with others. Intimate distance—from physical contact to 18 inches. This distance is reserved for personal expression with those we know well. • Personal distance—from 18 inches to 3 feet. This distance is used for casual and friendly conversations. • Social distance—from 3 feet to 7 feet. This distance is used in the workplace for business-related conversations, small meetings, and social functions. It is also used for other conversations that are not personal in nature. • Public distance—7 feet and beyond. This distance is usually for public speaking. Obviously, this distance in a personal conversation would constitute a huge communication barrier.
