Which describes the use of dissonance in the A section? *The vocal melody is primarily consonant.* Explanation: These two arias share many characteristics. Both selections use a ground bass (a repeating bass pattern over which the main melody varies), a common baroque harmonic device (although they differ in tonality). Both Purcell's aria and the A section of Handel's use triple meter, which gives a lilting effect. Purcell uses a bit more dissonance in his aria, compared to the A section of Handel's piece (although Handel includes much more dissonance and agitation in the shorter B section).

How does the accompaniment for each piece support the mood of the text? Purcell's use of a descending chromatic ground bass emphasizes the sorrowful atmosphere. Also, the emotional tension is sustained in the orchestral conclusion, where a chromatically descending violin melody movingly expresses the tragedy of Dido's fate. Somewhat in contrast, Handel uses a major key in the A sections of his aria even though the mood is melancholy (which he captures in the slow, soft graceful melody and accompaniment). In the B section of Piangerò la sorte mia, the accompaniment more obviously reflects the dark text, with rapid string passages, fast tempos, and minor tonality.
