Describe communication

Communication provides the means by which people connect, as the meeting point of all thoughts and relationships among people. Communication is the primary means by which culture is learned, transmitted, and preserved. Both verbal and nonverbal communication are learned in one's culture. *Communication can be the most significant problem in working with families from diverse cultural backgrounds!!!*

What is ethnicity?

Shared feeling of personhood among a group of individuals For example, race, religion, national or regional origin

Social classification based on external markers in group identity The US census bureau not allows people to choose more than 1 race

Give an overview of a cultural nursing assessment

Systematic way to identify the beliefs, values, meanings and behaviors of people while considering their history. Doing a cultural assessment can help us individualize and provide patient-centered care and avoid making cultural assumptions or stereotypes While cultures don't act or behave the same, one can systematically organize concepts of different cultures using communication, space, social organization, time, environmental control, and biological variations
