hun & po

3 hun, 7 po. if one is off, again, you're discombobulated. after you die, po stick around earth and then disperse. 3 hun ascend to heaven, etc.

6 Posterior Heavens & 9 Anterior Heavens

6 posterior heavens are for the "regular" people. 9 anterior heavens are for those who have reached immortality.

Daodejing

Central daoist text, allegedly written by Laozi, explains the concept of the Dao, or "Way"

Laozi

Composite figure and teacher, allegedly offered advice to Confucius. Left China to teach Buddhism in India, supposedly left a guard with his teachings which became the Daodejing.

Tudi gong

Earth god/neighborhood god, responsible of what happens in the neighborhood.

Zhang Daoling

Founder of the oldest surviving Daoist school; according to tradition, he established the Way of the Celestial Masters after Laozi appeared to him in a vision in 142 CE. "leader" of tianshi dao.

Pure Bond

Laozi reveals special bond between the Daoists and the gods, which decrees that popular gods and minor spirits would no longer receive sacrificial offerings. True gods do not eat or drink-true masters do not accept payments! it would be a perversion of power.

Zhuangzi

Written by Zhuangzi, also explains the concept of Dao and how to interline the body and mind

Shangqing

a revelation, literally means highest purity. incorporated alchemy, internal/external body relating to the universe. *****

Laojun

another name for laozi...

Lingbao

another revelation (literally means numinous treasure), that came about 3o years after shangqing. borrowed many buddhism traits, but removed indian aspects. untying the body to release the spiritual embryo and achieve immortality. Ge Chaofu was "creator" of this movement.

zhongmin

basically, when the world has gone to shiza, the selected "seed people" will be able to repopulate the planet.

Quanzhen

celibate priests; currently the biggest Daoist school of thought, celestial masters.

Scripture of 5,000 Characters

daodejing is the composed of five thousand characters. Characters were taken out, which makes the text vague. composed of 81 chapters (years in womb), 9 is a yin/yang (odd numbers yang) number.

daojia/daojiao

daojia-family of dao, philosophical daoism. daojiao-teachings of dao, religous daoism (this is where daoists material turns up). The teachings of dao belong to the family of dao.

Embryonic breathing

deep breaths in your stomach that help increase the flow of qi.

writ-pardon

document that is burned, that pardons the soul from purgatory. priest performs this at a funeral, family requests it.

Five Phases

earth, fire, water, metal, air.

hun & po souls

every individual consists of 3 hun (yang) and 7 po (yin). both are needed to stay balanced. without one, you become discombobulated. after a normal death-7 po stay around awhile in earth and disperse. the 3 hun will ascend to heaven, stay in ancestral shrine or go to the grave to recieve offerings. if death is sudden/tragic-one of these turns into demons, perversed qi.

Daodejing & Zhuangzi

explain how they are connected/related. neither one acknowledges the other as a text. incorporate similar ideas, however.

Zhang Lu

grandson of Zhang Daoling-founder of oldest surviving daoist school, armed conflicts between communities and the Empire (Cao Cao defeats him)

Laozi as a composite figure

he is not just one person, combined teachings of multiple people. reborn throughout history-81 times.

Confucius/Kongzi

he was thought to be one of laozi's student.

heqi ("uniting qi")

joining qi through sexual practices. supposed to be performed between husband and wife, but this was abused and the practice was abandoned.

Li Er

laozi's given name.

Zhang Jue

leader of the taiping dao- yellow turban.

Qi

lifeforce.

"quiet rooms"

literally a quiet room where one would go to write down their sins-moral slips, similar to going to confession--slate is wiped clean.

Kitchen God

looks after well being of family and a spy who reports to the jade emperor.

yang

male - positive but not in the best way.

taiji

means great ultimate. We know it today as tai chi-centering and rebalancing qi.

Daoist community

monistic-living in monestaries, separated by gender. or just living in a regular community.

Tianshi dao/ Celestial Masters/ Five Pecks of Rice

movement of the creation of a new state made up of "chosen people"; traveled around requiring 5 pecks of rice to join. Wei dynasty overcame this group, struck a deal and the Tianshi dao moved to southern china.

one "ruler" per parish.

Jade Emperor

one of the Taoist divinities who governs over heaven in later Taoism.

yin & yang

opposites, balance each other. within each individual, if one is off the person is discombobulated.

bureaucratic vision of Daoism

parallels between gods and kings. ex: city government and city gods. king is son of heaven, people are the eyes and ears.

City God

receives kitchen gods' and earth gods' yearly reports and in turn informs the celestial Jade Emperor

Jiao/zhai

ritual/offering, headed by taoist priests.

microcosm & macrocosm

the body is the microcosm of the macrocosm (universe). if you dont understand yourself (body) you cannot begin to understand the world (universe).

24 Parishes

theocratic state was broken into 24 sections, part of tianshi dao-five pecks of rice.

Three Pure Ones

three highest gods in taoism, pure manifestation of the tao, creators of sentient beings. 1-2-3-everything!

Taiping dao/Great Peace/ Yellow Turban

wore yellow because the sky was "yellow" from sandstorms etc. they wore turbans that were yellow to identify each other on the battlefield. Fought for peace, more combative. they lost and that was kind of it for them.
