The customer number is entered, the system calculates a check digit. The calculated check digit is compared to the check digit that is keyed in. If they are different an error is flagged. The customer would be asked to rekey their ID.

The total value of one or more fields in a batch of data. It is calculated in advance and then compared with the total as calculated by the computer.
