David Walker's Appeal
How does Walker respond to white's claim that blacks had no legitimate claim to American citizenship? How does he view colonization?
America is more their country than it is whites, they enriched it with their blood and tears. He feels blacks deserve to live on the land that they built.
Why does Walker believe that education was of paramount importance to blacks? How does he view blacks with a pretense of learning?
Education challenges slavery. It shows the world they are men and can govern themselves. Those with a pretense of learning are viewed to be as ignorant as a horse (bad grammar etc.)
What did Walker think about Africa?
He emphasized that people who originated from Africa had no right and were not considered human. Yet, everyone else is called a man and ought to be free.
How does Walker challenge white disbelief in black intelligence? Who does he challenge to make his case?
He questions Mr. Jefferson. Provides an examples that even slaves to Romans were intelligent as they excelled in science.
How does Walker explain slaves' relationship with God?
Slaves are not close to the White American's version because Christian Americans mingled blood and oppression into it as a way to make slavery seem just. Slave's care for the pure God who is against this injustice of whites using slavery.
To whom does Walker direct his appeal? Who is his target audience?
The colored citizens of the world. The enslaved men and women in the U.S.
What are Walkers views of enslaved black women?
They are "race-traders"
Why does the black community frustrate Walker?
They are content in such low employment
Does Walker believe that blacks and whites can ever co-exist in America?
Yes, that nothing is impossible with God.
