Simplest form

A fraction is in simplest form when the top and bottom cannot be any smaller (while still being whole numbers). Example: 2/4 can be simplified to 1/2. To simplify a fraction, divide the top and bottom by the highest number that can divide into both numbers exactly.

Mixed number

A mixed number is a whole number plus a fraction. Here are a few mixed numbers: 1 1/2, 1 1/3, 2 1/2...

Hundredths place

Also called hundredth's place. (in decimal notation) the position of the second digit to the right of the decimal point. For example, there are seven hundredths in the number 2543.978.

How to add/subtract fractions

Before you can add or subtract fractions with different denominators, you must first find equivalent fractions with the same denominator, like this: Find the smallest multiple (LCM) of both numbers. Rewrite the fractions as equivalent fractions with the LCM as the denominator. Adding fractions with the same denominator Examples: 1/5 + 3/5, Fractions with unlike denominators: 1/5 + 1/3

Converting between fraction and percent

Divide the top of the fraction by the bottom, Then multiply the result by 100 and read off the answer Example: What is 5/8 as a percent? Get your calculator and type in "5 ÷ 8 =", the calculator should show 0.625, then multiply by 100 and your answer is: 62.5% (remember to put the "%" so people know it is "per 100")

Equivalent fractions

Fractions which have the same value, even though they may look different. Example 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent, because they are both "half"

Converting between decimal and percent

Move the decimal point 2 places to the right and add a "%" sign! Convert 0.35 to percent Move the decimal point two places to the right: 0.35 → 3.5 → 35. Add a % sign: 35% Answer 0.35 = 35%

Hundreds place

Numbers, such as 784, have three digits. Each digit is a different place value. The first digit is called the hundreds' place. It tells you how many sets of one hundred are in the number. The number 784 had seven hundreds. The middle digit is the tens' place. It tells you that there are 8 tens in addition to the seven hundreds. The last or right digit is the ones' place which is 4 in this example. Therefore, there are 7 sets of 100, plus 8 sets of 10, plus 4 ones in the number 784.

Ones place

Place value refers to where a numeral is located in a number. Is it in the ones place? Tens place? Hundredths place? Wherever a numeral is located also gives it value. Let's take the number 165 as use it as an example. The 1 is in the hundreds place. The 6 is in the tens place. The 5 is in the ones place.

Thousandths place

The position of the third digit to the right of the decimal point. Decimal numbers, such as O.6495, have four digits after the decimal point. Each digit is a different place value. The first digit after the decimal point is called the tenths place value. There are six tenths in the number O.6495. The second digit tells you how many hundredths there are in the number. The number O.6495 has four hundredths. The third digit is the thousandths place.

Reciprocal

The reciprocal of a fraction is the fraction turned upside-down. For example the reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2 , or as a mixed number: 1 1/2

Converting between percent and fraction

To change a percent to a fraction, just use what that word "percent" means... PER HUNDRED! Convert 47% to a fraction: 47% = 47 / 100

How to multiply/divide fractions

To multiply fractions, all you have to do is multiply the numerators and denominators and simplify the result. To divide fractions, you simply have to flip the numerator and denominator of one of the fractions, multiply the result by the other fraction, and simplify.

Improper fraction

a fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator, such as 5/4.

Converting between percent and decimal

move the decimal point 2 places to the left and remove the "%" sign! Percent means "per 100", so 50% means 50 per 100, or simply 50/100 If you divide 50 by 100 you get 0.5 (a decimal number). So, to convert from percent to decimal: divide by 100, and remove the "%" sign.

Tenths place

the first place to the right of the decimal point in a number expressed in the Arabic system of writing numbers <4 is in the tenths place in the number 12.46>

Lowest common denominator

the lowest common denominator or least common denominator (abbreviated LCD) is the least common multiple of the denominators of a set of fractions. It simplifies adding, subtracting, and comparing fractions.

Numerator

the number above the line in a common fraction showing how many of the parts indicated by the denominator are taken, for example, 2 in 2/3.

Denominator

the number below the line in a common fraction; a divisor. a figure representing the total population in terms of which statistical values are expressed.

Tens place

the place two to the left of the decimal point in a number expressed in the Arabic system of writing numbers.
