When and why is stating a "definition" a good way to begin an essay? When are short definitions useful?

All definitions need to be supported with examples and sensory detail -explicit description makes your subject real and relatable - don't stray from your topic- use effective "transitions" to stay on task

What troubles may an extended definition writer encounter?

Extended definition essays can be long! Writer need to stay focused and on task.

Good writers • explain and support their purpose with solid examples/ generalizations • deep and insightful; balanced Bad writer • use too many examples but do not elaborate • no depth or insight
